Fun Finds: The Submarine Circus
A 1903 poster holds many amusing images
Ever seen a juggling octopus? Or a clown merman? A swordfish fencing with a mermaid? No, me either, until I stumbled upon this charming poster doing research for an article on mermaids. There’s so much whimsy going on, not least of which is merfolk wearing hats and carrying umbrellas!

What’s more natural than an octopus juggling? Anchors and starfish I get; not sure about the alarm clock and hatchet though…And check out the cute little merdog, umm, dogfish in the upper left corner.
A clown merman! Love that his polka-dot suit goes all the way down to his tail fins.
Love this couple hiding down in the corner: his plaid pants/tail, bowtie, and straw hat; her bouffant hairdo, and the fuzzy little whatsits she’s got on a leash.
By the way, the walrus palling around with the polar bears on the ice floe isn’t impressed with the submarine circus: “I’ve been in: it’s a bum show.”
